By Dr. Don Leisey
The mission of education is much broader, the expectations much
greater and the curriculum significantly expanded from the days when I was a teacher.
I spent 32 years as an educator, and as a former teacher, principal and
superintendent in the public school system and as a private school owner, I have had
opportunities to work with many dynamic teachers as well as interested and supportive
parents. The Report Card is a way of repaying all those wonderful people.
After retiring in 1989, I decided I was not ready to give up my interest in education
and wanted to continue toward making a difference in the field. Education is my
priority and opening The Report Card in 1991 was one way that I felt I could give
something back to teachers, parents and students by providing quality, affordible
educational materials that make teaching and learning exciting.
I don't think the average person realizes how much teachers go into their own
pockets for materials and supplies to enhance the education of their students. To
help teachers and schools stretch their tight budgets, The Report Card offers a Very
Important Teacher discount ranging from 10-20% off all individual purchases as well
as purchase orders from schools. The Report Card also offers fun and easy fundraising
opportunities for parent groups where a percentage of proceeds in cash or product
goes to the participating school.
As a proud sponsor of SJTA's Programs for Social Justice, The Report Card is
continuing our partnership this year with the dedicated SJTA members by again
conducting practical and hands-on training throughout the year. These training
sessions are offered at no charge to participants and attendees are eligible to
receive continuing education credits. Past topics have included "Read, Write and
Perform Poetry Through the Year" and "Integrating Art Throughout the
Curriculum." Our mutual goal is to provide teachers with fresh and creative
ideas that can be readily implemented in the classroom in order to enhance student
achievement, address state standards and make learning fun. Together we can make a
difference!
