ROYAL READING CHAIR

Silent reading

Motivate students to make the most of their silent reading time! Decorate a chair to resemble a throne by covering it with a royal blue or purple blanket. Add other royal touches such as gold ribbon or sequins. Place the chair in a designated classroom location. During silent reading time each day, invite a student who is on task and reading independently to sit in the chair. If desired, allow time for the student to share the book he is reading with his classmates.

SWEET READING

Developing fluency

Follow up a small-group reading lesson with fun fluency practice. On each piece in a supply of wrapped candies, write a different number that signifies how many sentences or pages (depending on the level of the book) you would like for a child to read aloud. Store the candies in a lunch bag. After your reading lesson, have a student remove a candy and announce the number. Then ask the student to read aloud, with fluency, the corresponding number of sentences or pages. Continue in the same manner for each student. Then reward students by inviting them to eat their sweet treats.

HIDDEN MESSAGE

Reading directions

0807_rm3r (32K)To make sure students carefully read and follow written directions, occasionally add attention grabbers to directions on the board or on teacher-made reproducibles. Students are sure to read directions carefully to look for any hidden messages.

Display students' favorite books from the school year! Have each child cut out a construction paper copy of an octopus pattern. Then instruct him to fold a 5½" x 5" piece of copy paper in half to make a booklet. On the cover of the booklet, have the student write the title and author of a favorite book, draw an illustration, and write his name. Then direct him to open the booklet and write a brief summary of the book. Next, have the student glue the booklet to the octopus body and glue two of the tentacles to the booklet. Mount the completed projects on a board. If desired, add twisted crepe paper seaweed to the display.
