Fact families
Students will step up to recite related math facts with this
whole-group activity. Prepare a set of flash cards so there is a multiplication card
and a division card from the same fact family for each pair of students. Distribute
a card to each student; then have the class stand and form a circle. Select a
student to step into the circle, read aloud his math fact, and provide the answer.
Then have him turn around to show his card to the rest of the group. The student
with the related fact card steps forward and repeats the process. The students step
back in line and the activity continues until all the facts have been matched.
Estimation
At the beginning of each week, count a quantity of similar items
and place them in a clear container. Then provide time for students to write on a
slip of paper their names and estimates of how many items are in the container.
Collect the papers, record estimates and the actual number of items on chart paper,
and display the results near the container. Later in the week, have students solve a
story problem that uses the displayed results. For additional challenges, ask
students to create their own story problems or make graphs about the estimates.
