SIMPLY SCIENCE

IT'S RAINING, IT'S SNOWING

Forms of precipitation

To demonstrate understanding of the forms of precipitation, a student folds a sheet of construction paper into fourths. Next, the child glues cotton ball pieces at the top of each section to form four clouds. Then he labels the clouds as shown and uses glue to draw each form of precipitation. For rain, the child draws drops. For snow, he draws crystal snowflakes. For sleet, the student draws tiny round pellets. For hail, he draws round lumps of various sizes. The student sprinkles glitter on his drawings before setting his work aside to dry. Then he adds his project to a board titled "Precipitation: Which Form Will It Take?"

LET'S ROCK

Types of rocks

This creative song is sure to help students remember the different types of rocks and how they are formed!

Three Types of Rock
(sung to the tune of "Three Blind Mice")

Chorus
Three types of rock,
Three types of rock
Make up the earth,
Make up the earth.

Igneous rocks were
melted then cooled:
obsidian, granite,
and pumice too.
Igneous rocks were
melted then cooled.
Igneous rock,
Igneous rock.

Repeat chorus.
  Metamorphic rocks
were changed by heat
and pressure within
the earth so deep.
Metamorphic rocks
were changed by heat.
Metamorphic rock,
Metamorphic rock.

Repeat chorus

Sedimentary rocks
in layers were built
Formed from the settling
of sand, mud and silt.
Sedimentary rocks
in layers were built
Sedimentary rock,
Sedimentary rock.

Repeat chorus
